“The Spirit of ’72” – in the footsteps of the Olympic Games

Munich celebrated the 50th anniversary of the 1972 Summer Olympics in 2022.

The 1972 Summer Olympics were held in Munich from 26 August to 11 September. At that time, 7170 active athletes from 121 countries took part in the sporting competitions. They competed in 28 disciplines for the precious metal and a total of 600 medals were awarded.

Under the motto “The Spirit of ’72”, the Bavarian capital had created an extensive supporting programme that could be experienced in Munich in the anniversary year with the special thought of the Olympic Games. Numerous site events, such as a guided bike tour along the Olympic sites or you can go on your own on the many traces of the Olympics in Munich. A special highlight is the Tent Roof Tour in the Olympic Park – here you get the unique opportunity to enjoy impressive views and special impressions high on the roof of the Olympic Stadium.

If you want to treat yourself to some relaxation after these active trips, you can be chauffeured through the Olympic Park in a rickshaw.

The sporting idea was also not neglected in Munich in July. For the first time since 1972, the European Championships offered some 4,700 active athletes from 36 nations the opportunity to compete against each other in an almost Olympic setting in Munich. Another sporting highlight was the Festival of Games, Sports and Art, which took place in the Olympic Park from 1 to 9 July.
